The (Unclear) Impact of Net Neutrality Repeal on Care3
Today's decision to roll back net neutrality regulations by the FCC may have far-reaching implications, but the impact on Care3 is still unclear. We are actively engaging in conversations with industry leaders and technology analysts to predict any issues that may arise that could impair our ability to deliver the highest quality planning and communications services for patients, families and the healthcare industry. Our goal in service development has always been to create a product that doesn't require much space on devices and is fast enough to perform at standards akin to old dial-up speeds. While we are still aspiring to those goals, repeal of net neutrality could change the rules so much that even platforms as optimized as Care3 could see performance slowdowns.
We will certainly keep you posted as we learn more and when any Internet Service Providers update their policies for how data is distributed to customers. Thank you for your attention to this issue.
The Care3 Team
Care3 to Sponsor National PACE Association Annual Conference
(Los Angeles, CA) – October 10, 2017 – Care3™(www.care3.co/blog), the world’s first team collaboration platform for healthcare delivered in the home and community, is sponsoring the 2017 National PACE Association Annual Conference. Care3 makes it easier for interdisciplinary care teams to collaborate with patients and families around a single care plan, helping to optimize care and avoid negative outcomes like emergency visits and hospitalizations.
Care3 CEO David Williams will address the conference about technology innovation for PACE and introduce keynote speaker, BJ Miller, MD, assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. “PACE providers know exactly what care is delivered while participants are in the center, but there is very little insight once they leave,” said Williams. “Care3 solves that problem and we are excited to support the NPA Annual Conference to help PACE organizations extend their care plans outside of the center.”
Recently recognized by Healthcare Tech Outlook as one of 10 Most Promising Healthcare Communications Apps for 2017, Care3 combines mobile and social technologies to drive greater collaboration in care delivery across settings to keep seniors and others living comfortably in their homes. Care3 is currently working with multiple PACE programs to improve care collaboration.
The 2017 NPA Annual Conference will be held Oct. 15-18 at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel in Boston, MA. Visit Care3 at booth #28 to learn more about Care3 for PACE and for a chance to win this year’s exhibitor BINGO.

Yes, you CAN get your family to help with caregiving. Here's how.
We know caring for others is hard--and sometimes you just need some help. The Care3 Way is based on families working together to care for loved ones--but we know that's sometimes, um, difficult. Whether it's lack of time, interest, personality clashes, or not knowing how to help, Care3 aims to engage those family members to get you the help you need by giving them convenient ways to help. Every task you can take off your plate gives you more time. How you use that time, we can't help with, but we know you'll figure it out.Care3 has a three-step process to get you prepare your family to collaborate on care and communicate progress with a text or a tap. It's called our Starter Care Plan.
How to Activate Your Starter Care Plan
Step 1: Invite Your Care Team
of trusted Family & Friends
Tap the
Care Teams
icon in the upper right corner of the home "Conversations" screen and then tap the Add Care Team button (shown on left) to Create a Care Team. Choose your Role ("Primary" is recommended) and tap "next" to go to the Invite screen. Add Care Team members by tapping "+" and entering emails, phone numbers, or device Contacts.
Tap "save" to send the invitations. The app then takes you to
Starter Care Plan
.
Step 2: Activate Your Starter Care Plan
of Common Care Tasks
Tap “get started” in the
Starter Care Plan
dialog box (appears right after you invite your Care Team). Review the tasks in your Daily and Weekly Activities lists. To add more activities, tap "add" in either Daily or Weekly sections and fill out the form. This is where you can add any items that are easy and convenient for others to do. Don't make excuses. Just add them. To remove activities, simply tap the check box to de-select.
Preparation complete. You're ready!
Tap the "start plan" button to activate. Each of your tasks, called
Actions,
appear in your new care Conversation. Now you or any Care Team member can tap "accept" on any Action to let everyone know that they will complete it. Watch them accept the tasks that are easy for them to do. That's the point! Make sure you send a "Welcome" text to the Care Team!
Step 3: View and Complete Actions
in My Actions Calendar
Now you can care for your loved one as a team. All accepted Actions are added to My Action Calendar. Tap the calendar icon on the home "Conversations" screen to view your Actions to-do list by date. When you complete an Action, tap the Action in the list and tap the "done" button at the bottom of the screen. This is VERY important because it notifies the Care Team that it was complete. Everyone wants to know!
This is how you get the most out of Care3. Thank you for choosing Care3 to help you care for your loved ones. Questions or comments? Contact us anytime at service@care3.co/blog.
ASDad Episode 6-Out Of Control
#Autism Spectrum Dads! Welcome to another episode of the #ASDad podcast. In this episode, I discuss recent incidents where my son has become out of control and the steps my wife and I have taken in those situations to console him. I wish we had universal answers for everyone, but I hope our ideas can work for your children.
I have been emotionally drained in the past few weeks because of these episodes, but want to share them with you so you know you're not the only one. And there IS hope. Listen in!
Family Caregiver Alliance Issues Alert About Senate Healthcare Bill Impact
In case you missed it, the Family Caregiver Alliance, a leading advocacy group for family caregivers, has issued an Action Alert regarding the new Senate "healthcare" bill, inappropriately titled, Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017. From the FCA Alert:
Depending on the state, caregivers caring for a relative who is spending down their assets, (or on a Medicaid program), may face wait lists or fewer hours of service across providers when they finally become eligible for Medicaid. No state is able to fill in the revenue lost from the proposed cuts in Medicaid funding. States have few options: pay providers less; change eligibility criteria; or provide less service to individuals. Who is expected to take up the slack? Families.
The Congressional Budget Office has indicated that 22 million people would lose their health insurance by 2026 with 15 million slated to lose their insurance within two years. How is this acceptable?
The time to act is now. Protect your healthcare and that of your loved ones. Please contact your Senator to have your voice heard!
Happy Father's Day ASDads!
Happy Father's Day ASDads! Hope you're enjoying the day and loving your kids while on the autism spectrum, but getting some time for you. Definitely want to give you a shout to tell you how much you're appreciated and remind you how much you mean to your kids and family.
Two stories this week. Both the boy and the girl had some episodes.
My son has a DVD player that he likes to watch videos on, but his favorite part is that he can start over shows by pressing a button sequence. Stop, Stop, Play starts the show over again. He will do that for hours on end. The same show, or he'll switch to any of a dozen other shows and do the same thing. Usually this action calms him, but early this week was the opposite. I had to change out his DVD player
My son has severe OCD with his autism and it took over to the point where nothing calmed him. When I tried to impede him from starting over the show, he fought, bit, scratched, cried and just couldn't be consoled or transitioned away. The OCD was too much.
I just couldn’t take it. Seeing him out of control, fighting me just to go through the sequence needed to start the DVD over, it was heartbreaking. Again, the helpless feelings were there.
Then there was anger. Not at the world, but that we couldn’t have a way for him to maintain his own time the way he has for the last couple years. I want to break him of that OCD target.
So I changed out the DVD player with Apple TV. Now we set it to shows on the Disney Channels that he likes—or doesn’t. He just has to get used to the different situation that’s out of his control. To his credit, he has adjusted well. He’s had very few tantrums and likes some of the shows that he’s watching. Thankfully there are very few commercials. He HATES commercials.
Don’t be afraid to change things up. Be ready for consequences, but this time, it has worked out. And I’m very thankful.
Oh you thought it was over? Nope. My daughter, whom you may remember is very high functioning, but on the low end of the autism spectrum. Her problem is behavior. Well, let's call it what it is--attitude. OK, many 10 year old neurotypical girls have attitude problems, but Rosie’s is particular. She can’t be on the iPad too much.
She has her iPad and watches gamers play a few different games on YouTube. I didn’t know that was a thing until I heard that other kids do that, too.
Well, she has ABA a few times a week and this week, she was horribly rude to her therapist. School’s out for the summer so she had the iPad all morning and didn’t want to give it up when it was time.
During ABA I heard name-calling, screaming, “I Quit”, “NO, NO, NO” and other proclamations of defiance. The rule is she has to be a good girl in ABA to get her iPad privileges. Well she lost the iPad for two dull DAYS after that performance.
At first Rosie was devastated. She kept asking for a second chance, even though she had been on chance 34 or something.
It’s so shocking because she likes her ABA therapist. The good news is when Rosie isn’t on the iPad she finds other things to do. She paints, plays w/ her toys, her favorite is her millennium falcon airhog drone. Even better, she goes in the backyard and plays with the dog or flies her kites. She’s so much more constructive and active with her time when she doesn’t have her iPad.
That was our learning.
So this summer, my wife and I are going to severely restrict iPad time for Rosie so she’ll be more active. She loves doing all those other things, but the iPad is addictive. Once again, breaking a behavior is a key to better times.
Sometimes it’s tough being an ASDad, but the little wins are worth it. Happy Father’s Day guys!

The Security of Your Data on Care3
Dear Care3 Members,
The recent WannaCry ransomware attack received global attention because of its widespread impact on multiple countries and industry data. What wasn’t reported was that the healthcare industry was a prime target of the attack..
Care3 takes the security of your health conversations and data very seriously. Care3 was unaffected by the attack and have had zero hacking incidents in the history of our company.
The danger posed by hackers to global healthcare information systems is at a critical point. According to a recent article in Fortune titled,Why Health Care Is Especially Vulnerable to Ransomware Attacks, here’s why:
Outdated medical systems are woefully unprepared to deal with a new class of criminals willing to hold patients' medical data, credit card numbers, and other personal information hostage barring a big payout. In fact, the FBI has issued several stark warnings about the unique and growing threat ransomware presents to health care companies specifically in the past few months.
And consider this from the same article:
There are some obvious reasons that make the medical sector such an enticing target for criminals. For one, health information is simultaneously intensely personal, accompanied by crucial financial information, and universal—after all, health care consumerism isn't so much a choice as it is an ontological necessity of being a human.
This emerging security threat is one of the main reasons we built Care3 with such high levels of security—AND why we want you to have the ability to control your own health data and that of your loved ones you care for. Healthcare Tech Outlook has recognized us a Most Promising Healthcare App because we give you and your family the power to control your own data in interactions with health professionals.
Electronic health records are controlled by health providers and your access is limited. With Care3, you control access to all of the data shared in your conversations, including medications, images, video, audio, appointment dates, care tasks, and any text conversations around the care that you have with your family and close friends. This is all vital information for the health of your loved ones and should be directly under your control. Care3 gives you that control.
We urge you to continue using Care3 for your most important health conversations and for sharing healthcare data between family members and any health professionals you’re working with. Care3 keeps your health information under your control and protected from the rising threat to healthcare industry systems.
It’s our pledge to help you care for your loved ones and that includes protecting your personal health information.
Take care,
David S. Williams III
